sol·i·dar·i·ty noun \ˌsä-lə-ˈda-rə-tē\ : unity (as of a group or class) that produces or is based on community of interests, objectives, and standards
Recently several paintball fields have come under fire for various reasons, and so far, have survived these onslaughts as a result of the tenacious patrons and support of the paintball playing community. Earlier this year, Central Florida Paintball , located in Lakeland Florida, and home to several large events each year, fought and won the right to continue after a single noise complaint resulted in a public hearing. Paintballers and local businesses alike mobilized , spread the word, and in the end truth and good sense prevailed, and we still have CFP around to play at!
As I write this, a battle is broiling in eastern Long Island over Cousins Paintball. The field, located in Coram NY, is one of Americas oldest and most respected venues. It is also my Alma Mater , the first time I ever played paintball was on that field way back in 1985! Back then it was known as American Airgun Games, it cost $50 a day to play. For your $50 you got a rental nelspot 007, two 12 gram co2 cartridges, a pair of shop goggles, a tube of paint (10 rounds) and a hot dog and a soda for lunch! Teams were made up in the morning, and you played with the same people all day long. I made some great friends at that field, I met members of the Wild Geese, Master Blasters, Can Con, Force recon, and so many others who went on to great things!
The Amazing thing is, this field is still in operation! In the early 90’s Cousins paintball, a great group of people dedicated to our sport, took over the old aagg field and have been going strong ever since. Dean and Paul have done a great job with it, and to this day it remains a mecca of sorts. If you haven’t been to a “Long Island Big Game” your paintball life is incomplete. THEY HAVE REAL HELICOPTERS! Yep, they fly around and harass you by shooting paintballs and dropping grenades on you! Every year thousands of players head to long island for the annual big game, and they spend allot of money doing so!
Now , after all this history, success, and giving back to the community via charity events, the Brookhaven town Council has put their sights on Cousins Paintball field in Coram, and decided they must go! Town Supervisor Lesko along with Councilwoman Kepert are leading the charge to EVICT Cousins from the property! They are claiming this is due to environmental concerns, but heres the deal:
The land that cousins paintball is located on is indeed pine barrens and environmentally sensitive, which is why it got to be a paintball field in the first place! Way back in the 80’s when Long Islanders were just starting to figure out the dumping crap in the woods was bad for their drinking water, and that most of their watershed was under the pines, many steps were taken to prevent said dumping, clean up existing toxins, and protect the land for the future. Either Suffolk county or the state of NY restricted development on this property making it essentially worthless aside from its environmental value. The original owners of American Air Gun games were able to prove way back then that paintball was non toxic and environmentally friendly, I think one of the partners even ate a paintball for effect if the legend is true! They obtained a land use permit, paid rent every month, and built one of the worlds most awesome paintball fields!
And now , all of a sudden, its apparently dangerous! (/sarcasm!)
You see Brookhaven , The Town (elsewhere it would be considered a county, but Long Island is screwy that way, they have an extra level of bureaucrats) bought the land from the county of Suffolk or the state of NY (more confusion) about five years ago. Cousins paid over $95,000 a year in rent since then, but for the last year Brookhaven has been returning their rent checks, and Cousins has proof of this for the doubters. so for four years, they accepted the almost $400k in rent money without question, even though they had already declared this land a “preserve,” and now its a problem!
Great, now they are claiming that
- Cousins hasnt paid rent in a year (and making it sound like they didnt want too!)
- paintball is toxic to the environment
- that they tried to help cousins to relocate, but really didn’t want to put them anyplace else
- and a bunch of other annoying crap…
As always, thanks for reading. I appreciate you taking your time to suffer through my rantings. Until the next time, when im calmer and able to tell you how awesome Hurricane paintball, in Palm Bay , FL is. Happy hunting and keep on pumping!

du·plic·i·ty- noun \du̇-ˈpli-sə-tē : contradictory doubleness of thought, speech, or action; especially : the belying of one’s true intentions by deceptive words or action.
I think we are seeing Duplicity on so many levels in our society its impossible to keep track of, I guess that’s the idea, divide and conquer, paintball not excluded. I’m not going to get into the politics of whose trying to fleece whom, I’m most concerned about our trying to fleece ourselves.
Way back in the mid 90’s paintball industry, as a whole , tried to convince people we weren’t using “guns.” Well intentioned, but ultimately a really bad idea, that’s how the term “Marker” became popular. Before you write to tell me that originally paintball guns were tree markers , I’ll concede you are 100% correct. But there was also lengthy, good intentioned, campaign by paintball industry to ensure the projectile shooting machines we use in the sport were commonly called “markers.” This was spurred on by anti gun legislation and anti paintball factions who blamed paintball for instilling “violence” in our youth. Video games and graphic movies have done far more harm than anything in paintball could ever do in my opinion. We didn’t stop calling nail and staplers guns, lets not deny our paintball shooters are also guns, just make sure the word “paint” always precedes “gun” and were good. So perhaps the whole “marker” thing was necessary for the times, but what about today?
Never before have there been so many manufactures offering so many militaristic options in paintball. Holy cow is mil sim blowing up! Not so long ago I was frowned upon because I wore , and still wear, my woodland camo BDU’s. I didn’t and don’t wear them because I wanted to play soldier, I’ve had my fill of that already. I wear them because they help me to play the game of paintball better, they are cheap, and they are durable.
The fact remains that we do play a “war” game, just like when we play chess or dodge ball, or the hundreds of other games both real and digital people play every day. We can call it anything we want, but at the end of the day we are still using projectiles fired from “guns” to eliminate (kill) our opponent and that’s exactly how “outsiders” see it, despite the pretty colors. I clearly recall telling my anti gun mother it was just capture the flag, with a twist , way back in the 80’s to get her to let me play. I think those base
war game” instincts are now more appealing to a much larger group of newer players. Possibly it is a side effect of the war on terror, maybe a form of decompression from the bad economy, but mainly,
I think people are sick and tired of putting PC names on things and they’re just done with the BS. I stopped deluding myself years ago. we play war games, plain and simple, mankind has been doing that same thing for thousands of years with different tools, its not a bad thing and you simply cant get a more effective “therapy” without anyone getting hurt.
People are going to disagree, that’s fine, that’s why I love America, we all get a voice. At least that’s how its supposed to happen, I’m not so sure that is what is actually happening anymore. I don’t care about peoples politics, but I do care when politicians spend more time protecting their campaign finances (ers?) than they do their constituents.
I care when so many people are actually afraid to have an opinion, because that opinion might get them fired, or targeted, or hurt them in other ways. So yes, I’m pissed off and I don’t blame Republicans or Democrats or even the Tea Party, I blame American citizens for not speaking up, for falling for fear tactics , for not having an opinion and voting blindly. We don’t have to agree, but it all of our responsibility to keep corruption out of government and maintain a government for the people, by the people. Can anyone honestly say you feel that’s how its working now? I thought not, now that you’ve seen through the duplicity, go do something about it, use your voting power, use your voice, write your elected officials and tell them how pissed you are! I think I hear a Black Copter flying by so ill stop my rant now.. (just kidding, sort of..)
So, you see there is Duplicity all around us, some we can use, some is just plain annoying, and some is pure evil. But if we all do our part, well see this dark age through to better times.
In the mean time, Gyspy and I managed to scrape enough change together so we can play OCT 1 & 2 at Hurricane Paintball, in palm bay, FL for the Spacecraft Scenario. Its a Duncan Game so you know itll be fun, and its sort a space marine vs space bugs theme (you’ve seen the movie im sure!) Well be “Bugs” and hanging with Team Trigger Happy, and hunting down space marines. Blues Crew will also be there, along with a hot list of whos who in paintball, at least for the southern states.
For those who were wondering (thanks for the notes,) I still haven’t a had a smoke, so I’m nicotine free for over 7 months now! I’m also getting into great shape, down to a ten minute running mile, and Gypsy and I have cycled over 20 miles (yes, in one day!) and kayaking a few times a week as well. So look out space Marines, were coming to get you!
As always, thanks for reading. I appreciate you taking your time to suffer through my rantings. Until the next time, Happy hunting and keep on pumping!
Playing Paintball every month or so has really reminded me that it is indeed a sport. Its a very forgiving sport, anyone can play, but if your an aggressive type, its also good to be in shape. the mind can sometimes give orders the body cant follow, pain ensues. the best way to avoid that pain, is to be in decent physical shape. my goals aren’t lofty, at least not in my mind. I don’t need to be a Tough Mudder or a triathelete.
I just want to be able to run a bit without getting to the point where it takes me 20 minutes to catch my breath. That smoking thing for the last ten years didn’t help, I can say I’m already feeling a little better now that Ive quit. It’s not easy sometimes, its the treadmill for 20 minutes a day (mostly at max incline), the bicycle for a mile or two every third day or so. Honestly, I like the bike better, always have, but theres no place convenient where its safe to push it on the bike for too long without becoming points as a road kill for some retiree. I think we need to be at least kind of fit when we play, the game is allot more fun when your not heaving from a short sprint. But Im no fitness guru either, your reading the words of a guy whos idea of a work out was getting up to find the remote, and “running” was going out for a new pack of smokes only a few short months ago. I’m still working on things, especially the mind As The body heals, but Paintball helps.
Resurrecting SCP is the same, I get some updates done, get some articles done or uploaded, attend an event here an there to get back into the swing of things. perhaps I was gone a bit too long, I find myself getting a bit discouraged at the lack of feed back or page views. Ive even done some research and I still say theres nothing else out there quite like SCP. We can still offer info no one else has.
we just need to get our base readers back, and recruit new ones to get things heading in the right direction again. the more users we have, the more info well be able to offer. But for now we are running uphill. we’ll get back to the top, if we keep working at it, and you can help us out a bit by letting people know we’ve got a pulse again.
All that being said, between the blogs and articles and updates, weve got a great new product out. youve probably seen the adds for the new SCP Raxx system. I think its pretty awesome myself and you should just make it easy and buy one ok? Itll help support SCP
You may see some new ad boxes here and there, clicking on some of them puts a few cents in the site support fund, on some others, if you buy a product, scp will get a little %, and on yet others, theyre just our friends and we want to help support them. I wont say which is which or even ask you to click anything, but doing so does help SCP and I thought people needed to know that. Also if you do make a purchase, and heard or saw that company or product on SCP, please just let them know by telling them “SCP sent me” or getting there through one of our links.
Florida Pump Chumps:
So Gypsy and I went to Central Florida Paintball the third week of April for a good old Pump meet! All in all there were about ten of us I think, and we had a blast! there is nothing more challenging than playing paintball against other pump players! I hope more of you start coming out. Not just for the pump chump meets, but where ever your at. You dont need to be in Florida. Just stick up a note on SCP, you local fileds boards, where ever.. if you let me know, ill even put it up on the SCP home Page , no charge, ever for events listings!
I dont care, big game . small game, whatever the format, you get two pump players opposite each other and your going to have a nail biter. It was Gypsys first time playing pump, and she was bunkering people (err, Bubba!)right out of the gate. The side lines were going nuts, and this was a woods ball game!

But like all games with pump players, the skill demonstrated was awesome. At one point, I had to hold off the (in)famous Ninja Dave, Lee (aka Big Pumpin) and Frank all at the same time. Going up against some of the best players in Florida is hard enough, going up against them all at the same time, holy fun batman! yep, Lee got me, but had they known they were all battling me at the same time, id of lasted about 5 seconds. The lesson of the day is divide and conquer! Or at least try any way, sometimes your the windshield, sometimes your the bug… If you ever get the chance to watch these guys work, Its a must see.
Gypsy and I still haven’t decided if or where we will play in May. Its already two weeks in. Things are very tight and getting tighter, so its hard to justify spending the little reserves we have on Paintball. Then again, its probably the best therapy there is to keep sane, at least for me, so it may be well worth any bit we spend on it. but well let you know when and were via the face book fan page and the message board.
Mavericks take on Limited Paint Formats:
People have been playing stock class and “hopper ball” almost as long as Paintball has been around. Lately, there seems to be a variant of this that includes the mil-sim league players. they are using feed mags, like you see on a real weapon. these mags hold 10 to 20 paintballs and feed them into the gun from the underside. Groups of fans of this type of play are organizing leagues and events nation wide. Seems to me, this creates a great opportunity for pump players as well. Im working on a limited paint format that includes. or at least is open too, all types of markers. In places where there but a few pump players, and a few mil-sim players that use the mag feed, or even “longbow” style markers I think this will be a great way for all to have an awesome day on the field! In the spirit of Stock Class, once you eliminate any equipment advantage, the game boils down to tactics and skill. I think a pump vs a mag fed semi vs a stock class pump, vs a spring feed pistol can all be about equal over all, given reload limiting, and it would be a really fun format combining the best of all types of play! and oh yes, flags will be involved! Ill publish my format once ive got it worked out, and anyone can add their ideas!
